Been finding lots of monarch butterfly caterpillars in my garden the last few days. It never fails to amaze me how many insects milkweed seems to support, but these little larvae are the star of the show, at least in the public consciousness around wildflower gardening and insect conservation.
The second one pictured is the largest I’ve seen lately and looks like it should pupate any day now. The others better hurry up as we are running out of summer! Unfortunately I have seen late summer/early autumn chrysalises that succumbed to an early frost before they could emerge as butterflies and make the trip south. Poor things.
